The Savings and Loan (S&L) Crisis was a period of speculative lending and financial collapse that affected banks and thrifts in the late 1980s. The crisis caused the failure of nearly a third of the 3,234 savings and loan associations in the United States. The S&L crisis ultimately resulted in a taxpayer-funded bailout and regulatory reforms in 1989.
